Clubs from São Paulo and betting companies met this Friday (September 11th) at the headquarters of the São Paulo Football Federation (FPF) to coordinate a response to draft laws that restrict betting advertising in the city of São Paulo. The meeting brought together representatives from Corinthians, Palmeiras, São Paulo, Santos and Juventus da Mooca, as well as executives from the sector.

The main concern, according to Poder360, is Bill 560 of 2025, currently being processed in the São Paulo City Council and with the possibility of a vote as early as next week. The agreements between Corinthians, Palmeiras, and São Paulo with betting companies total approximately R$ 350 million per year, according to reporting by Globo Esporte.

The project and its limitations.

Authored by councilman João Jorge (MDB), the proposal prohibits advertising by betting operators at events held in the city. The restriction covers signs, banners, and panels in sports venues, among other means of advertising. Those who violate the rule may be fined R$ 50 and have their right to hold events suspended for up to two years.

The text has already received favorable opinions from the committees of the City Council. To reach the mayor Ricardo Nunes' (MDB) signature, it needs to be approved in two votes by the plenary.

Impact on clubs

The clubs believe the measure would affect revenue from sponsorship contracts. There is also concern that a potential ban limited to the municipality of São Paulo could create a competitive imbalance; teams from the city would be at a disadvantage compared to clubs from other states in their ability to raise funds through this type of partnership.
