Forged documents when opening an account: Legitimuz comments on what goes unnoticed in a betting registration.
For the betting industry, this gap has a direct aggravating factor: the date of birth is the most targeted field, because it determines whether or not the registration passes the age of majority barrier.

Most onboarding processes at betting sites confirm that the fields in a document are filled out and in the correct format. Few confirm that the document is authentic. For fraud prevention specialists, it is precisely in this difference that a forged document goes unnoticed, even in operations that already comply with the formal compliance requirements of the sector.

What counts as a forged document in a betting site's registration?

A forged document is any fraudulent identity used to open an account: a document falsified from scratch, a real document altered in some field, such as date of birth or photo, or a third-party document used with the photo replaced. In all three cases, the extracted data may appear perfectly valid to an automated reading system. The problem is not in the data itself, but in the authenticity of the document behind it.

For the betting industry, this gap has a direct aggravating factor: the date of birth is the most targeted field, because it determines whether or not the registration passes the age of majority barrier.

Where betting registration usually fails

Most workflows use OCR to read the document and check if the fields match what the user typed in the form. This process confirms readability, not authenticity. A document altered with a slightly different font for the date of birth, or a photo pasted over the original, may read perfectly well in an OCR scan and still be fake.

Few betting registration workflows verify physical security layers of the document, such as microtext, holograms, or printing patterns, even when this check is technically possible in a 100% digital workflow through document examination. The result is a registration that fulfills the regulatory requirement on paper, without testing the only question that really matters: is this document genuine?

Why does this weigh more heavily on the betting sector than on others?

Betting houses deal with a type of risk that other regulated sectors do not face in the same way: the incentive to circumvent the age barrier is direct, and forged documents are often the simplest way to do so, even simpler than fabricating an entire synthetic identity. This makes documentoscopy, the analysis of the physical and digital structure of the presented document, one of the most relevant barriers specifically for this sector, alongside biometric liveness verification that confirms whether there is a real person behind the document.
