Fernanda Montenegro plays Dona Laura in 'Emergency 53'

Fernanda Montenegro, at 96 years old, plays Dona Laura in “Emergência 53”, a new medical drama series on Globoplay. The production premiered this Thursday (August 20th) on the streaming platform.

According to information obtained by Viva, the character is an irreverent, witty, and good-humored elderly woman who faces memory problems and poor health. Dona Laura is the mother of the protagonist, Dr. Irene, played by Yara de Novaes.

The character has habits that conflict with her daughter's medical advice. Laura smokes, plays bingo in secret from Irene, and harbors a particular obsession: planning her own funeral. This behavior builds a profile that combines issues related to aging with moments of humor throughout the plot.

In a video posted on social media, the actress spoke about the role. “Laura was a challenge. She's a very rich, very beautiful character. I hope I did well. In this life, we should only do what we love,” said Fernanda Montenegro.

The plot of Emergency 53

The series follows the dramas of doctors, nurses, and drivers in a special unit of the Mobile Emergency Service (SMU). Unit 53 brings together professionals considered brilliant, but who have been rejected by the system. In their daily work, they face emergencies and try to prevent deaths.

The production is inspired by the daily routine of the Mobile Emergency Care Service (SAMU) and addresses the challenges faced by pre-hospital care teams.
