Indonesia arrests 321 foreigners for illegal online gambling scheme in Jakarta.

Indonesian police arrested 321 foreigners for alleged involvement in illegal online gambling operations . The operation took place this Saturday (9) in a commercial building in downtown Jakarta, the country's capital. Most of those arrested are from Vietnam.

The action is part of an effort by authorities to crack down on illegal online gambling activities, according to CNN Brazil. Online gambling is prohibited in Indonesia, the world's largest Muslim-majority country.

Among those detained are 228 Vietnamese, 57 Chinese, 13 from Myanmar, 11 from Laos, five Thais, and three Cambodians. Wira Satya Triputra, director of the Indonesian police's criminal investigation unit, presented this information at a press conference.

Of the 321 people arrested, 275 were accused of violating the Indonesian penal code regarding gambling. The crime carries a maximum sentence of nine years.

The suspects had been operating the scheme for two months, according to authorities. Wira stated that most of the foreigners knew they were in Indonesia to operate online gambling . The main targets were foreign clients.

On Friday (8), a day earlier, there was another major operation. Indonesian immigration authorities arrested 210 foreigners allegedly involved in online investment scams . The operation took place on Batam Island, located about 20 km from Singapore.

Untung Widyatmoko, an Interpol Indonesia official, said in a press conference that there is a trend of online gambling operations shifting from Cambodian cities to Indonesia.

Authorities have intensified operations against these illegal activities. The goal is to combat international criminal organizations operating in Indonesian territory.
