Downturn: Why Las Vegas is facing a crisis
Casinos in the state ended 2025 with US$1,7 billion in net profit; Las Vegas Strip leads losses, with an 81,2% drop in revenue.

Nevada's casinos ended fiscal year 2025 with a net profit of $1,7 billion, a 34,8% decrease compared to the same period in 2024, according to an announcement from the Nevada Gaming Control Board (NGCB).

The performance reflects a downturn in virtually all regions of the state, with the Las Vegas Strip leading the losses. The drop in visitor traffic to the American entertainment capital in April 2026 indicates that the sector's difficulties have extended beyond the period covered by the annual report.

Widespread drop in profits

The Nevada Gaming Abstract 2025 report, released by the Nevada Gaming Commission, found that the state's 305 casinos with gross gaming revenue of $1 million or more totaled $30,8 billion in revenue, a 2,2% decrease from the previous year. Gaming accounted for 36,4% of that total. The sector collected $1,1 billion in gaming taxes and fees during the period.

Clark County accounted for 177 of these establishments and recorded a net profit of US$1,5 billion, a 34,7% decrease compared to 2024. The Las Vegas Strip was the area with the greatest deterioration; the region's net profit fell by 81,2% during the period.

Outside the Las Vegas metropolitan area, results were mixed. The 34 casinos in Washoe County ended the year with a combined net profit of $84,8 million, a 50% decrease; however, total revenue for the region rose 0,5%, reaching $1,7 billion. The 22 casinos in Elko County went in the opposite direction; net profit totaled $93,4 million, a 1,6% increase. The Carson Valley area, with 15 casinos, generated a net profit of $24,3 million, a 2% increase.

The South Shore Lake Tahoe region in Douglas County, with seven licensed establishments, ended the year in the red; the net loss reached US$50 million, a 65,1% increase compared to the deficit recorded in 2024.

Data from April 2026

The figures for April 2026 offer a more recent overview of the sector. Nevada casinos generated $1,3 billion in revenue for the month, up 5,3% from the same period a year earlier, according to the NGCB; however, this figure was still below the $1,43 billion recorded in March.

Tourist flow also showed signs of weakening. The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA) reported that 3,28 million people visited the city in April, a 1,8% decrease compared to April 2025. Hotel occupancy reached 83,1% in the month, a decline of 1,5 percentage points. On weekends, occupancy was 92,7%, down 1,1 percentage points; during the week, it reached 79,5%, a decrease of 1,7 percentage points.

Conversely, convention attendance grew 3,2% in April, reaching 592.100 people. This increase was driven by recurring events such as NAB and the Google NEXT conference, as well as the return of traveling trade shows, including Coverings.
