Finance Minister defends revising inflation calculation in Brazil and cites the example of bets.

Finance Minister Dario Durigan stated that he would not change the 3% inflation target. The statement was made this Tuesday (June 16th) during his participation in the Warren Investimentos podcast , hosted by economist Felipe Salto. Durigan advocated for improvements in the institutional relationship between the Ministry of Finance and the Central Bank.

The minister argued that there are opportunities to expand coordination in multiple areas, according to information released by VALOR. The articulation between fiscal and monetary policies is among the areas of joint action mentioned, including initiatives to strengthen mechanisms for monitoring and regulating the financial market.

"I wouldn't change the inflation target today, but I think there's a lot of room for improvement in the relationship between the economic team and the Central Bank," Durigan told economist Felipe Salto on a Warren Investimentos podcast.

As an example of improvement, he cited discussions about strengthening the fight against illegal betting. “For example, we are currently discussing 'enforcement' of illegal bets. It's important that we have the Central Bank very involved, because the funds from these illegal bets are passing through the financial system. So there needs to be convergence of action,” he said. According to the minister, convergence of action is necessary since the funds moved by illegal bets transit through the financial system.

Improving the fight against betting platforms that operate outside the bounds of regulation has been a priority on the coordination agenda between economic authorities, aiming for greater control over irregular financial flows.
