Security Amendment threatens R$ 500 million in sports funding; understand why.

The proposed amendment to the Constitution regarding public security could remove up to R$ 500 million in resources earmarked for sports and other social areas in Brazil. This warning comes from organizations linked to the sports sector, which are monitoring the proposal's progress in the National Congress.
According to the Painel column in Folha de S.Paulo, the proposed constitutional amendment (PEC) foresees a gradual reduction of up to 30% in the funds that sports betting companies make to the National Council of Sports Committees (CNCE). The stated objective of the measure is to redirect these resources to finance public security.
Affected entities
The Brazilian National Council for Sports and Leisure (CNCCE) comprises the Brazilian Olympic Committee (COB), the Brazilian Paralympic Committee (CPB), the Brazilian Confederation of School Sports (CBDE), and the Brazilian Confederation of University Sports (CBDU). These organizations warn that the budget cuts will harm the training of athletes and the development of social projects.
The rapporteur for the PEC (Proposed Constitutional Amendment) in the Senate, Rogério Carvalho (PT-SE), said that he intends to maintain the text in the form in which it was approved by the Chamber of Deputies. The senator's position aims to expedite the processing of the proposal, but contradicts the mobilization of sports entities.
Pressure in the Senate
In the week following the publication of this article, Olympic and Paralympic athletes, as well as the presidents of the committees that make up the CNCE (National Confederation of Olympic and Paralympic Sports), are scheduled to meet with senators to request the preservation of resources allocated to sports.
