What percentage of gaming revenue does each game type represent in Nevada?

The Nevada Gaming Control Board, the body responsible for regulating gaming in the state of Nevada, recently released a report on how much the industry earned from gamers in 2022. Unsurprisingly, it was a record amount, as it seems that every time a new report is released by the Control Board or the American Gaming Association (AGA) on industry revenue, the figures are always higher than the previous year.

Columnist Marcus Fortunato from TicTabs meticulously examined the regulatory agency's annual report, revealing a complete accounting of revenue for gambling operators.

“People who frequent casinos or other gambling establishments already have a good idea of ​​which games offer players the best chance of winning. But for those who only play occasionally or visitors who don't see the statistics daily, it can be a revealing experience,” commented Fortunato.

Although statistically, the numbers show that most slot machines had higher year-on-year profit percentages, a gambler would have to play a lot over time to notice it. Most of the percentage profit differences between 2021 and 2022 are only hundredths of a percentage point. For example, if you know that slots earned casinos 8,06% of the money wagered on the machine in 2022 and 8,04% in 2021, will a player really notice any difference?

Therefore, based on casino revenue across the state of Nevada in 2022 – $10 billion from slot machines and $4,8 billion from table games, compared to $9,2 billion from slots and $4,2 billion from tables in 2021 – the 10,5% year-over-year increase in revenue was the result of players betting more, even though the percentage of profit was insignificant.

Incidentally, players wagered $139,8 billion on slot machines in Nevada in 2022, an 8% increase over 2021, and $35 billion on table games and sports betting, a 12,7% increase over 2021.

“As in the previous year, slots had a profit margin of 5,09% for operators or a return percentage to players of 94,91%. This doesn't mean you'll win almost 95% every time you play; it means that 95% of the money that came in returned to the players,” the executive noted.

On the table games side, mini-baccarat retained 11,19% of the money wagered, compared to 14,18% for blackjack, 15,95% for craps, and 20,14% for roulette.

Still, the best bet for players remains sports betting.

The profit percentage on sports betting in 2022 was 3,13%, meaning that players took home 96,87% of their bets. The 176 sports betting sites operating in Nevada in 2021 earned $446,7 million for operators, just a 0,3% increase over the previous year.
