The mayor of São Paulo, Ricardo Nunes (MDB), announced that he intends to prohibit the display of advertising for sports betting platforms, the so-called bets, in public spaces in the capital of São Paulo. The intention was revealed this Tuesday (14). The measure would follow the decree already published by the mayor of Rio de Janeiro, Eduardo Cavaliere (PSD), this Monday (13) and by the mayor of Belo Horizonte, Álvaro Damião, this Tuesday (14).

The information was released by Pleno News based on an exclusive interview given by Cavaliere. According to the mayor of Rio, Nunes contacted him by phone on Tuesday morning (14) and said that he would take the same path.

Bill under consideration in São Paulo

In the São Paulo City Council, a bill by councilman João Jorge (MDB) with a similar proposal is already under consideration. The text prohibits the advertising of sports betting platforms on outdoor media in the capital and aims to combat gambling addiction and family over-indebtedness. The proposal provides for a fine of R$ 50 per infraction.

The project has advanced in the Constitution and Justice Committee (CCJ) of the São Paulo City Council and is awaiting a vote in the plenary session.

Decree in Rio

In Rio de Janeiro, the decree was published this Monday (13) and covers locations with outdoor advertising, street furniture and other spaces whose operation depends on municipal authorization, license, permission or concession. Inspection will be the responsibility of the Licensing and Inspection Coordination (CLF), responsible for determining the immediate removal of irregular advertising and applying the sanctions provided for in municipal legislation, including fines.

Decree in Belo Horizonte

The mayor of Belo Horizonte, Álvaro Damião, signed a decree prohibiting advertising by fixed-odds betting companies, known as "bets," on street furniture, municipal properties, and public events. The document was published this Monday (July 13). The measure applies to static and digital advertising devices. Municipal concessions, permits, and authorizations are also subject to the restriction.
