Blackjack (21): what it is and how to play

Are you familiar with the game Blackjack? Perhaps you've heard of it by another name, the famous "21," popular in casinos and featured in many films. Despite being a card game, it's not as complex as poker – and even has strategies that can help you win or avoid losses. Discover below how to play Blackjack and other interesting facts about this simple game.
What is Blackjack?
Blackjack is a very popular card game in land-based and online casinos. It mixes luck with strategy and probability, and the goal of the game is to get as close to 21 as possible before the dealer.
How to play Blackjack
To play Blackjack, you only need two people: the dealer and the player. As mentioned before, the goal of Blackjack is to form a hand with cards that total 21 points, or as close to that as possible without exceeding that number. The cards have values, which are arranged as follows:
- Numbers from 2 to 10 are worth the number itself.
- Jack, Queen, and King are worth 10 points each.
- An Ace can be worth 1 or 11 points, depending on which is more advantageous.
The best possible hand is an ace + a card with a value of 10.
A brief explanation of how to play Blackjack.
The dealer begins by drawing two cards for themselves and two cards for the player. One of the dealer's cards remains face down, while the other card and the player's two cards reveal the sum of the numbers.
If the player's total is 21, they win the hand. If, even with both cards, the player's total does not add up to 21 points, they can choose to fold, stay, or draw another card.
Whether the player folds or stays, the dealer reveals their additional card – if the player has stayed playing Blackjack, they win the sum closest to 21 – whether it's the customer's or the dealer's card.
If the player chooses to draw another card, they risk going over 21, hitting the mark, or remaining below. The game ends if the dealer wins or draws another card that goes over 21.
History of Blackjack
There is no confirmed origin for Blackjack, but history suggests the game was created by the French in the 17th century, where it was called Twenty-One. During the French Revolution, the game spread throughout the world, mainly to North America and the United States, where it became popular.

- Stand: Keep the current hand.
- Double Down: Doubling down and receiving only one more card.

- If the player does 21 with two initial cards (Ace + 10, J, Q or K) Blackjack (special payout, usually 3:2).
- If the player goes over (exceeds 21), they automatically lose.
- If the croupier busts the ball but the player doesn't, the player wins.
- If both have the same total, a tie occurs.push), and the bet is returned.
Blackjack Strategy
Unlike a slot game, Blackjack has several strategies to minimize the possibility of losing. Some of these are:

Basic strategy:
- Using the blackjack table (when to ask for a card, stop, double down or split) based on the dealer's card.
- It minimizes the house advantage (it drops to ~0,5%).
Bankroll management:
- Set a loss limit before you begin.
- Bet small, consistent amounts.
- Do not increase your bet after consecutive losses (avoid "martingale").
When to use Double Down:
- In strong hands against weak dealer cards (e.g., 11 against 5 or 6).
When to split:
- Always split Aces and Eights.
- Never divide by 10 or 5.
Avoid side bets:
- For example, "Perfect Pairs" and "21+3" generally have high risk and a greater house edge.
Understanding the croupier's rule:
- Knowing whether the croupier stops at "17 suave" helps with strategic decisions.
Card counting (in land-based casinos):
- Advanced technique for tracking the ratio of high to low cards in a deck.
- It doesn't work in online casinos with shuffled decks for each round.
Play versions with better odds:
- Choose tables that pay 3:2 in Blackjack (and not 6:5).
- Tables with fewer decks of cards generally favor the player.
Types of Blackjack
Because Blackjack is such a popular game, it has variations around the world. We've selected the most famous ones to explain and let you choose which one seems most fun:
Classic (or American) Blackjack:
The most popular version in land-based and online casinos. The dealer receives two cards (one face up and one face down). Standard payout of 3:2 in natural Blackjack.
European Blackjack:
The dealer receives only one face-up card at the start. The second card is only received after the players have acted, increasing the house advantage.
Spanish 21:
All cards with a value of 10 are removed from the deck. In return, it offers extra payouts for special combinations (21 with 5 cards, for example). Players can always double down, even after splitting.
Pontoon:
Popular in the UK and Australia. Different terms: “Twist” (to request a license), “Stick” (to stop). 21 is called “Pontoon” and pays more.
Blackjack Switch:
The player receives two hands and can exchange the second card between them. This increases the chance of good combinations, but in return, the Blackjack payout is reduced (2:1 → 1:1).
Double Exposure Blackjack:
The dealer's two cards are revealed. A great advantage for the player in terms of information – however, compensating rules increase the house advantage (Blackjack pays 1:1 and ties favor the dealer).
Perfect Pairs / 21+3 (Side Bets Blackjack):
Version with side bets:
Perfect Pairs : You win if the player's first two cards form a pair. 21+3 : Combines the player's cards with the dealer's face-up card, forming poker hands (straight, flush, etc.), but it's riskier, although with higher payouts.
