Ricardinho returns to the Gávea Hippodrome to equal the world record for wins.

 

Being the biggest name in Brazilian horse racing isn't enough for Jorge Ricardo. He's close to equaling the current record holder for races won, former Canadian jockey Russell Baze, who has 12.844 victories. Living in Argentina for 11 years, Ricardinho chose the Gávea Hippodrome as the stage to reach this historic milestone. He will ride in 8 of the 10 races scheduled for Sunday, February 04th, the opening day of the Triple Crown, and six more on Monday (February 05.02th). In addition to the excitement generated by the anticipation of the record, the Jockey Club Brasileiro will host the Gávea Bier Truck event starting Saturday, making the weekend even more special.

Ricardinho is on a personal journey to break his record for wins. He will continue riding in Argentina until Saturday. On Sunday, at the Gávea Hippodrome, starting at 15 pm, the jockey will have some of the best mounts of the day at his disposal. This, in theory, increases his chances of achieving his goal. A Botafogo fan, Ricardinho will be honored by the team with a plaque and a jersey bearing his record-breaking number, and there will also be a race named after his beloved team.

For Jorge Ricardo, the anticipation of returning to ride at the Gávea Hippodrome is enormous. “It was at Gávea that I achieved my consecration. Everything started there. It's the place where I obtained most of my victories. It's always a pleasure to return and see friends and people who have given me so much joy. Equaling the world record in front of my home crowd will be an unforgettable moment in my career,” commented Ricardinho.

For Luiz Alfredo Taunay, president of the Brazilian Jockey Club, Ricardinho's choice of the Gávea Hippodrome as the stage to achieve the record-breaking mark is natural. “A significant number of J. Ricardo's 12.844 victories were achieved at this racetrack. It makes perfect sense that he returns, even after a victorious decade in Argentina, to the JCB to achieve the record with the Brazilian turf-loving public, who will be able to bet on an idol starting from R$ 2,” commented Taunay.

PMU Brasil, the operator that manages the betting at JCB, will have promoters registering attendees. Those registered will receive a stylized cup. There are two models that allude to the horses Falcon Jet (1991 Latin GP and 1992 Brazilian GP) and Much Better (1994 Brazilian GP, ​​1994 Pellegrini GP and 1996 Latin GP), both ridden by Ricardinho.

The attractions of Gávea Bier Truck liven up the opening festival of the Triple Crown. Among the trucks, bikes, and stalls on display at the Jockey Club are Komber Beer and Brothers Beer with craft beers, Espírito de Porco, Vulcano Burger, and Cutelo with various burger options, as well as other choices. Children will have a play area set up with slides, inflatable soccer, and a trampoline.

After the races, two free shows will be held. On Saturday (03), Rafael Soares will sing hits from all genres and on Sunday (04) a samba circle promises to close the day well.

Jorge Ricardo, 56, is considered the most important Brazilian and South American jockey, and one of the best in the world. Since 2006, Ricardinho has resided in Argentina and continues his journey to the top of the rankings of the greatest in the history of horse racing.

The Brazilian has amassed 12.841 wins as of Tuesday, January 30th, and is close behind Russell Baze, a Canadian jockey based in the United States, who has 12.844 and is retired.

Riding since 1977 and a Botafogo fan, Jorge Ricardo started as an apprentice at age 16. He is the son of Antônio Ricardo, who in his time held the record for the most wins at South American racetracks.

Outside of Brazil and Argentina, Ricardinho competed in Peru, Uruguay, Chile, the United States, France, and the United Kingdom. For 26 years, he dominated the jockey statistics at the Gávea Hippodrome. Jorge Ricardo's career is full of historical milestones. He was the first jockey in the world to reach the mark of 10 victories (in 2008). Furthermore, he won the jockey statistics four times at racetracks in Argentina.

Ricardinho has also won the Grande Prêmio Brasil at the Jockey Club Brasileiro, the Grande Prêmio São Paulo, the Grande Prêmio Bento Gonçalves, and the Grande Prêmio Internacional Latino Americano.
