Recent discoveries of match-fixing in the Brazilian Série B championship have been making headlines in recent days. However, corruption scandals on the field have existed for many years. Relive three emblematic cases in the gallery below: the Sports Lottery Mafia scheme, the Edílson Pereira de Carvalho case, and Juventus' relegation in 2006. Check it out!

Scandals involving betting houses have existed for decades, and the most famous case became public on October 22, 1982: the "Sports Lottery Mafia".

At the time, Placar magazine brought to light allegations of corruption and match-fixing, involving 125 defendants, including referees, celebrities, players, and sports officials, in a scheme that rigged results to favor a group of bettors.

In 1985, the Federal Police concluded the investigation into the Sports Lottery Mafia, but only 20 people were indicted due to the difficulty in finding evidence.

In 2005, in what became known as the year of the 'Whistle Mafia', referee Edilson Pereira de Carvalho was arrested on charges of manipulating the results of games in that year's Brazilian Championship.

At the time, the competition, won by Corinthians, was marred by a scandal that benefited businessmen who, after learning of the rigged results, placed bets on websites on the internet.

In addition to the former referee, the federal police, who led the investigations, also arrested businessman Nagib Fayad, accused of being responsible for the scheme. Furthermore, the 11 matches officiated by Edílson in the Brazilian Série A were annulled and replayed. He was suspended and subsequently banned from the sport.

In 2006, Italy also embarrassed the world with accusations of match-fixing. In the case involving major Italian league teams (Juventus, Milan, Fiorentina, Lazio, and Reggina), the allegations stemmed from the appointment of 'bought' referees to officiate specific matches in the competition.

Among the evidence obtained by the investigation were released telephone conversations of the then-president of Juventus, Luciano Moggi, proposing the scheme. When discovered, the scandal resulted in Juventus' relegation, as well as the loss of their last two Italian league titles won in 2005 and 2006.

All the teams involved started the season with negative points. In total, 19 managers and referees were suspended. ( Lance – Futebol )
