The "luckiest man in the world" wins the lottery.
A Croatian man who claims to have survived seven major disasters has won the lottery prize with his first ticket in 40 years, reports the website Ananova. Frane Selak, 74, who won £600 (approximately R$2,8 million), is considered "the luckiest man in the world".
"I'm going to enjoy my life now – I feel like I've been reborn. I know God has been watching over me all these years," said Selak.
His first stroke of luck came in 1962, when the train he was traveling on from Sarajevo (Bosnia) to Dubrovnik (Croatia) derailed and fell into a frozen river. Seventeen people drowned, and he managed to survive. A year later, he was thrown from a DC-8 plane flying from Zagreb to Rijeka (both in Croatia) when one of the doors fell off. This time, 19 people died, but Selak landed in a haystack, escaping with cuts and bruises.
In 1966, the bus he was traveling on in Split, Croatia, fell into a river, killing four people. He swam and saved himself.
Disasters
The fourth accident was in 1970 when his car caught fire and he managed to escape just before the tank exploded.
Three years later, he lost most of his hair when a faulty fuel pump spilled oil onto his car's hot engine, spreading flames that engulfed him.
In 1995 he was hit by a bus in the Croatian capital of Zagreb, but was only injured. The following year, he was driving through the mountains when he collided with a truck coming from the opposite direction. Salek managed to jump into a tree before the car exploded.
He also had four failed marriages and, after winning the lottery, commented, "I think my marriages were disasters too." But now he's going to buy a house, a car, a boat, and plans to marry his girlfriend, who is 20 years younger than him.
