In this week's Época magazine interview, economist and philosopher Eduardo Giannetti, author of the bestseller... Happiness, He comments on and criticizes the Federal Government regarding the closure of bingo halls through a Provisional Measure.ÉPOCA – Give a concrete example of a rule that benefits ethics in politics.
Giannetti –
An independent Central Bank. This means the Central Bank is not subject to the dynamics of partisan interests or the will of a particular leader. Another example: issues regarding the legality of certain economic activities, such as gambling. These should be regulated by law, so as not to be subject to the whims of retail politics. I found the way the government acted regarding bingo to be serious. There was enormous authoritarianism in the provisional measure that decreed the prohibition of gambling. If it is a legal activity, and entrepreneurs have invested capital in it, you can't just say with a stroke of the pen that this activity is now prohibited. That is fantastic authoritarianism. I'm not defending gambling, but you can't change the rules of the economic system in such an arbitrary way, at the whim of a caprice, to try to contain a crisis. It's ethically wrong.
