Legalization of gambling could move forward with Davi Alcolumbre as president of the Senate.
Davi Alcolumbre was one of the key figures in advancing Bill 2234/22 in the CCJ (Committee on Constitution, Justice and Citizenship), which authorizes casino resorts and tourist establishments, bingo halls, and the jogo do bicho (illegal lottery) in the country. A leading opponent of gambling in the Senate, he ran for president, criticized Alcolumbre, and received only 4 votes (Photo: Andressa Anholete/Agência Senado).

Four years after leaving the presidency of the Senate, Davi Alcolumbre (União-AP) was re-elected by his colleagues this Saturday, with 73 out of 81 votes, for another two years at the head of the House. The comfortable result, the third highest vote count since redemocratization, was a consequence of the broad coalition of parties that supported him, inhibiting opponents. Davi Alcolumbre assumed the Presidency immediately after being elected. This is the second time he has held the position. Davi led the House for the first time between 2019 and 2021.

The congressman from União Brasil, who will also be in charge of the National Congress, was chosen after defending the independence of the Legislative branch and the power gained in recent years over the Budget. In a speech to the plenary, Alcolumbre cited the need to "fulfill agreements" regarding parliamentary amendments, referring to the crisis that has been ongoing since 2024.

Davi promised to work for Brazil, focusing on job creation, economic growth, social development, protecting public health, and ensuring quality education for Brazilians, as well as guaranteeing his commitment to approving measures focused on the safety of Brazilians.

A report by O Globo indicates that the new president of the Senate has already signaled his intention to move forward with the bill that legalizes gambling. According to the Rio de Janeiro newspaper, Alcolumbre was one of the key figures in advancing the text, but the vote on the proposal authorizing casinos, bingo halls, and the jogo do bicho (a type of illegal lottery) in the country was postponed at the end of last year. The bill stipulates that the Ministry of Finance will be responsible for regulating the activity.

The main opponent of the proposal to legalize gambling in the Senate, Senator Eduardo Girão (Novo-CE) was also a candidate for president this Saturday (1st). Girão gave a harsh speech against Alcolumbre, whom he referred to as "the candidate of continuity who wants to return". Apparently, the speech of the senator from Ceará did not work because he received the support of only three other colleagues, in addition to himself, and also became unpopular with the new president of the Senate, Davi Alcolumbre.
