Vermelho with the Minister of Tourism, Marcelo Álvaro Antonio

Minister Paulo Guedes' statement this week was received with enthusiasm by Congressman Vermelho. The minister had shown some resistance to the proposal, but stated to Época magazine that Brazil has all the conditions to host this type of venture, boosting luxury tourism.
The proposal to reopen casinos in Brazil was once a campaign promise of the congressman. When he took office in February 2019, Vermelho spoke with leaders of parliamentary groups, participated in committees and parliamentary fronts in defense of casinos.
Due to his actions, Vermelho was appointed president of the Subcommittee for the Legalization of Gambling: “After more than 70 years since the presidential decree that abolished casinos in Brazil, I have never seen a more favorable moment than this for gambling to be allowed again in Brazil,” explains the congressman. Casinos were abolished by Eurico Gaspar Dutra in 1946.
The work being done in the Chamber of Deputies has the unconditional support of President Rodrigo Maia and Deputy Newton Cardoso, president of the Tourism Committee. Vermelho is a full member of the committee and is part of the Parliamentary Front for Tourism, made up of more than 200 senators and deputies.
The congressman explained that casinos will positively impact the entire tourism sector in Brazil. “The idea that gained traction within the Parliamentary Front is the implementation of casinos modeled after Las Vegas and Singapore, where casinos operate attached to large leisure centers. These establishments will have luxury hotels, bars, restaurants, shops, arenas for cultural performances, nightclubs, and theme parks,” the congressman emphasized.
According to him, there will be attractions for all tastes, not just for those who like to gamble. "We will bring in foreign tourists and allow Brazilians who go to gamble in other countries to stay here, spending their money in our country, generating jobs and development."
Before the Covid-19 pandemic, around 200 Brazilians left the country every month to gamble in casinos around the world. Las Vegas alone accounts for approximately 150 per year. "Brazil is exporting gamblers, consumption, dividends, and foreign exchange, which could remain here if casinos were legalized."
Executive Support
The work of parliamentarians and business leaders in the tourism sector ended up sensitizing authorities in the Executive branch. Vermelho held several meetings with the Minister of Tourism, Marcelo Álvaro Antonio, and the president of Embratur, Gilson Machado Neto, who defend the proposals with complete conviction.
“In my conversations with the Minister of Tourism and the president of Embratur, it became clear that the government is in favor of establishing casinos,” says Vermelho. “Marcelo said that job creation will be very significant, and Gilson stated that there are studies showing that the number of foreign tourists could triple,” he adds.GDia Newspaper – Adelino de Souza – PR)
